DOYLE BRAMHALL, IS IT NEWS

“[Doyle Bramhall] is as influential as he is influenced...”—Austin Chronicle

Legendary Texas singer, songwriter and drummer, Doyle Bramhall returns with the long awaited Is It News, his first collection of original material. Yep Roc Records releases the album on September 18.
“I wanted to make an all-original record that was big, energetic, intimate, and unpredictable,” Bramhall states. To co-produce the album, he chose longtime friend and collaborator Louisiana swamp-rocker Charles “C.C.” Adcock. Adcock describes, “When Doyle asked me to co-produce this with him, I thought about him as a human being and what is the perfect portrait of this man I know pretty well and love dearly. Him as a songwriter, as a great singer and deliverer of those songs, a consummate drummer and beat man, and someone who’s always surrounded himself with amazing guitar players.”
Appearing on Is It News are Bramhall’s son and guitar master Doyle II, bandmates from the past Denny Freeman and Jimmie Vaughan as well as Adcock, Mike Keller, Mato Nanji, bassist Scott Nelson, keyboardist Billy Etheridge among others.

Is It News features 12 songs written over the course of Doyle Bramhall’s personal and musical life. “Chateau Strut,” was originally constructed in 1974 when Bramhall, Stevie Ray Vaughan and keyboardist Billy Etheridge were warming up at Club Chateau in East Texas, and “Cryin’,” written in 2005, was recorded in post-Katrina New Orleans at The Nappy Dugout & Up with Mike Napolitano.
Doyle Bramhall has been an integral part of the Texas music scene for over 40 years beginning with his first band The Chessmen, who opened for Jimi Hendrix in 1968 when Bramhall was still in his teens. Following the success of his acclaimed solo debut Bird Nest On The Ground (1994), Bramhall went on to produce critically acclaimed albums by Marcia Ball, Indigenous, and Chris Duarte. He released his Yep Roc debut, Fitchburg Street—a heartfelt ode to the blues and R&B—in 2003.
A national tour in support of the album will be announced shortly.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

8/11/06
What a special night it was at the Granada Theater in Dallas! Bugs Henderson and his great band, then Doyle, Mike Keller and Jim Milan took the stage and rocked the house-and if that wasn't enough, longtime friends, Anson Funderburgh and Smokin' Joe Kubek, joined Doyle onstage to finish out the set.
Doyle and Anson backed up Lightnin' Hopkins more than 30 years ago at the Granada and this month the newest owners, Mike & Mike are celebrating their 2nd anniversary with the Granada-so visit

DOYLE BRAMHALL

Anyone seeking the finest Texas blues and soul need look no further than Doyle Bramhall. The singer, drummer and songwriter has been at the heart of the new Texas blues scene since its birth in his native Dallas in the 1960s. He and Jimmie Vaughan transplanted that renaissance to Austin in the early ‘70s with the band Storm, and Bramhall later wrote a number of signature songs for and with Stevie Ray Vaughan, including “Change It,” “Tightrope” and “Life By The Drop.” And, yes, he is the father of Doyle Bramhall II.
His own albums place him in the same artistic pantheon as the luminaries he has worked with. His 1994 debut, Bird Nest On The Ground, featuring both Vaughans and his son on guitar as well as the Memphis Horns, was a masterwork of grooving Texas blue-flame soul that spotlighted Bramhall’s hearty shout of a voice. Last year’s Fitchburg Street paid tribute to some of the influences on his singing and style and included a restored version of his original demo of “Life By The Drop."

HAPPY BLUES YEAR:
2003 produced some of the best
From the Asbury Park Press 1/02/04

By Richard Skelly

Through an act of Congress on February 1, 2003 was declared “the year of the blues.” One hundred years have passed since W.C. Handy first heard a man “playing the weirdest music I ever heard” in a train station in Tutwiler, Mississippi.

A few years later, he decided to try his own hand at writing blues songs. “St. Louis Blues” followed in 1914, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Here in no particular order, are the best recordings I’ve heard in 2003, all released by contemporary, living artists.

Doyle Bramhall “Fitchburg Street” (YepRoc Records)

The drummer and singer who wrote songs with Stevie Ray Vaughan through his glory days in the 1980s is back on the scene with a powerful album. Though only one of these songs is from Bramhall’s pen, the production values on the album are excellent. Bramhall and his band also are one of the most powerful blues acts you’ll ever see live. Unfortunately, their touring has been concentrated around Texas and Louisiana. Here’s hoping that changes in the New Year, and Bramhall and company bring their unique roadhouse blues stylings to clubs and festivals in New Jersey and New York.
